The Yoga of Action
कर्मयोगः · Karma-yoga · 43 verses
Arjuna is confused: if knowledge is higher than action, why must he fight? Krishna's answer is the heart of Karma Yoga. No one can stop acting, so the real question is how to act: without clinging to results, as an offering, for the good of the world. The chapter ends by naming the enemy of this way of living, desire and anger, and how to master it.
Traditionally linked with Mars, the planet of drive and action, and with the 9th house of dharma and purpose. It is read during a Mars Maha Dasha, when energy and restlessness run high, to turn anger and urgency into steady, selfless work instead of conflict. It is a reflective practice, not a prediction.

Arjuna says: if you think understanding is higher than action, why do you urge me into this terrible deed? Your mixed-sounding words confuse my mind. Tell me clearly the one path by which I can reach the highest good.

Krishna answers: in this world there are two paths, as I said long ago: the path of knowledge for the contemplative, and the path of action for the active.

Not by avoiding action does anyone reach freedom from action, and not by renunciation alone does anyone reach perfection. No one can remain even a moment without acting, for the qualities of nature drive everyone to act. Someone who holds back the organs of action but keeps dwelling on sense objects in the mind is deluded and called a hypocrite.

But one who controls the senses with the mind and engages the organs of action in selfless work, without attachment, stands out. Do your assigned duty, for action is better than inaction; even the upkeep of your own body cannot be managed without action.

At the beginning of creation, the Creator made beings together with the idea of sacrifice and said: by this you will flourish; let it fulfil your wishes. Nourish the gods with it and let the gods nourish you; by supporting each other you will reach the highest good. The gods, nourished by sacrifice, will give you the enjoyments you want; whoever enjoys their gifts without giving anything back is a thief.

Good people who eat what remains after the offering are freed from all wrong; those who cook only for themselves eat sin. Beings come from food, food from rain, rain from sacrifice, and sacrifice from action. Know that action arises from the sacred teaching, and that from the Imperishable, so the all-pervading Reality is always present in the offering. Whoever does not keep turning this wheel, living for the senses and in wrong, lives in vain.

But for the one who delights in the self, is satisfied in the self and content in the self alone, there is no duty left to do. Such a person gains nothing by acting and loses nothing by not acting, and depends on no being for any purpose.

So keep doing your duty with no attachment, for by acting without attachment a person reaches the Supreme. Janaka and others reached perfection through action alone. And consider, too, the good of the world, which you serve by acting.

Whatever a leader does, others follow, and whatever standard they set, the world adopts. Krishna says: I have no duty in the three worlds and nothing left to gain, yet I keep acting. If I did not act tirelessly, people would follow my path; these worlds would collapse if I did not act, and I would bring confusion and ruin to beings.

As the unwise act attached to the result, so the wise should act without attachment, wanting to guide the world. A wise person should not unsettle the minds of those still attached to action, but should show how it is done by doing their own work well and with devotion.

All actions are carried out by the qualities of nature, but a mind deluded by ego thinks, "I am the doer." One who understands how the qualities and actions divide, and sees that qualities are acting on qualities, is not attached. Those confused by the qualities cling to their actions; the knowledgeable should not unsettle those who do not yet see the whole.

Offer all your actions to Me, with your mind on the self, free from craving and from the sense of "mine," and fight without fever. Those who follow this teaching always, with faith and without complaint, are freed from the hold of action. But those who scorn it and do not follow it, confused in all knowledge, are lost and mindless.

Even the wise act according to their own nature; all beings follow their nature, so what can forced restraint achieve? Liking and disliking toward the objects of each sense are already in place; do not come under their power, for they are obstacles on the path. Your own duty, even imperfectly done, is better than another's duty done well; it is better to meet the end in your own duty, for another's path is full of fear.

Krishna answers: it is desire, it is anger, born of restless passion, all-devouring and very harmful; know this as the enemy here. As fire is covered by smoke, a mirror by dust and an unborn child by the womb, so knowledge is covered by this. Knowledge of the wise is veiled by this constant enemy in the form of desire, a fire that is never satisfied.

The senses, the mind and the intellect are said to be its home; through them it clouds knowledge and confuses the embodied self. So, Arjuna, first bring the senses under control, and then destroy this sinful thing that ruins both knowledge and direct realisation.

The senses are said to be powerful; beyond the senses is the mind, beyond the mind is the intellect, and beyond the intellect is That, the self. Knowing what stands beyond the intellect, steady yourself by your own deeper self and defeat this hard-to-reach enemy in the form of desire.
